Former CIA analyst, Jack Ryan is in England with his family on vacation. He then goes to Buckingham Palace to meet them when there's an explosion. Some people are trying to abduct a member of the Royal Family but Jack stops them killing one of them and capturing the other. He learns that they're Irish revolutionaries and the two men are brothers. The one that's still alive vows to get Jack. Later while the man is being transported, he is broken out. Jack learns of this but doesn't think there's anything to worry about. But when he's at the Naval Academy someone tries to kill him but he stops him. He learns that they're also going after his family so he rushes to find them but they made an attempt but they survive. That's when Jack decides to rejoin the CIA. And they try to find the man before he makes another attempt.

Review :

Good guys are real good, and the bad guys are real bad.

Patriot Games is a more than serviceable thriller, perhaps a bit out of date when viewing it now, but still a very effective good against evil piece. The source material is so dense and intricate it was always going to be hard to condense that into a 2 hour movie but I feel the makers manage to keep it fleshy whilst making the respective characters interesting and watchable. The acting on show is more than adequate, Harrison Ford is great in the role of Jack Ryan, he manages to portray him as a sensitive family man who can step up to the plate when things get ugly, and Anne Archer is solid enough as the wife and mother caught up in the web of nastiness unfolding.

The baddies are led by the brooding Sean Bean who is a little under written, whilst Richard Harris is sadly underused, but the action set pieces make their mark and thankfully we get a riveting final reel that cements the steady ride we have under taken. It is formulaic to a degree, but that is OK if the combined efforts of all involved are spot on, and here they are, 7/10.

Santiago was basically a screw-up. At Gitmo, screw-ups aren't tolerated. Especially by Col. Nathan Jessup. In Cuba, Jessup and two senior officers try to give all the help they can, but Kaffee knows something's fishy. In the conclusion of the film, the fireworks are set off by a confrontation between Jessup and Kaffee.

Watch it for Jack Nicholson and his dialogues

This is one of the movies, I have watched many many times. First few times, Tom Cruise seemed to be giving an ordinary performance; probably my shortcoming that I was not able to understand his character. But, then I realized that he was playing exactly the character he was supposed to portray and he did it in a impeccable manner - wow!!!! He was just second to Jack Nicholson.

I could not imagine if anyone else could have replaced Jack Nicholson - his stellar performance (as always) and the intensity and ferocity with which he delivered his dialogues - man, even his facial expressions at times were worth a watch.

Story line and plot don't seem to be so strong and there will be many people who would not agree with its end and even with the message of the movie, which is although not so clear but definitely points towards some of the not so best practices being followed in any country's army (over discipline in the name of straightening the people and getting things in order or even avoiding any further chaos or things being run by certain people just to settle their personal scores and run in a way they think is the best, even disregarding other people's reasonable opinions). However, the other things apart, movie was a treat to watch. Director Rob Reiner and writer Aaron Sorkin didn't leave any stone unturned when it came to dialogues in the movie - in fact, the dialogues delivered by each and every character (not only Jack Nicholson) have been simply stunning.

Anita Mui's finest hour.

Yoshiko Kawashima (1990) is the tale about the last crowned Princess of Manchuria. She lived a sad and depressing life that was controlled by others. As a child she was sent to live in Japan. Whilst there she adopted a Japanese name and was basically a pawn throughout her entire life. Anita Mui stars as the "Last Princess of Manchuria". She gave a depth to this complex character that a few actresses could have pulled off. Andy Lau (who acted his tail off) co-stars as the Chinese nationalist who's life is caught up with the Princess turned Japanese agent in war torn China circa. 1930's.

Sadly this film has been neglected over the years. I found this to be the perfect companion piece to "The Last Emperor". This movie chronicles a forgotten part of history (at least to a westerner such as myself).

I highly recommend this movie. I have never witnessed such a fine performance from either Ms. Mui or Andy Lau. The acting and direction was highly entertaining and the storyline was very strong and easy to comprehend. After watching this movie you'll understand how much of a loss it was when Anita Mui passed away. This has to be her finest hour as a actress and as a singer.

Highest recommendation possible.

The ballad near the end of the movie (sung by Anita Mui) fits in perfectly. Even though I couldn't appreciate the lyrics (they were sub-titled in Chinese characters) I found it to be very haunting and well suited for this movie.

Kang is a cruel criminal.When he was young,his parents detested him and slapped him when he tried to help or be nice.His girlfriend is violently gang-raped by two foreigners and this is the beginning of Kang's madness.Soon he sadistically rapes foreign women,violates her with a piece of wood,bites off her nipple and finally kills her..."Suburb Murder" is one hell of an offensive film.There are three vicious gang-rape scenes in this sleazy flick as well as plenty of sex and full-frontal nudity.The opening scene is brief but very gory,as is the closing scene which leads up to it.Unfortunately the direction is amateurish and the acting is pretty awful,however if you are a fan of morally dubious HK Category III cinema give this sickie a try.7 out of 10.Enjoy this depraved spectacle of rape and sexual violence.

Georgian cinema just doesn't get any better

Have seen this movie over 7 times now and own on the video too.

There was a time when georgian cinema was stalled, all new movies were at least forgetable if not worse (actually not that many movies were coming out at that time).Udzinarta Mze(english trsanslation would be

"Sun of Sleepless" ) came out exactly at that time as a message that georgian cinematographic traditions weren't extinct. Movie is about Physician who is developing new treatment of cancer, but his studies are not well recieved because medical society is co "closed" one. He is not well recieved in the society in general because he is "different" and nobody needs him . Despite all this, his family is very supportive and his son who is seen in the begining of the movie as a some sort of criminal believes in his father more than anybody. As you might expect physician dies without achieving his dream.

Despite the fact that this movie is addressing the global problem of "closed society" it is very "georgian". Characters, relations between family, realtions between friends and outside world is very "georgian".

As you watch the movie you start liking the main characters more and more and you can feel that director has a huge compassion towards them, he really cares about them. Everything in this movie is outsdanding:story, cast, photography etc. Emotions can overwhelm you watching " Sun of Sleepless".

Movie is also full of comical and violent (latter is quite new to georgian cinema) episodes which are handled very tastefully and never go out of context, and you never get swayed away from the main theme, on the contrary these episodes are integral part of the movie. How does director do this? Don't know

Actors are magnificent. Guja Burduli playing the main character is extremly convincing as a struggling scientist, he is outstanding throughout the movie. D Kazishvili who plays his son Dato is not even a professional actor, but he does more than outstanding job, He steals the show in so many instances that him being amature is not even remembered.

And of course worth noting the haunting score written by director himself but one can see the roots coming out from georgian folk music.

Many things can be said about this movie, but there are not many movies out there that can deliver this level of perfect balance between realism and an art. It is an emotional filmmaking at its best.

It is simply a masterpiece of moviemaking!

Ah Ha! The REAL truth of Animal Rights activism!!!

I love this movie so much! "Rebels With a Cause" (or Norway "Svart Pantere") is film that actually tells us the truth about the difference between Animal Wellfare and Animal Rights, and what a clear big line it draws too! The Animal Liberationists are portrayed as being vandelous, self-righteous and they treat humans far worse than animals. Then, some police and the victim's families try to stop the Animal liberationists.

I think if they release this film in paces other than Scandenavia or Brasil, it would be one to share with everyone. It is quite an elightening experience indeed.

Great fun Spanish riff on Death Wish

You know, I've never been a huge fan of the original Death Wish. Or indeed vigilante films in general, except when sleaze and trash is the focus, preferably with a handy admixture of cheese. Fortunately Night of the Executioner delivers on all three of these elements with enough aplomb to override my natural dislike of the simplistic, morally vacant set up. The plot is as simple as can be, Dr. Hugo Arranz is celebrating his 50th birthday with his wife and daughter, when vile hoodlums break in, rape and kill both wife and daughter and cut off his tongue in fairly graphic fashion. Fortunately he survives and unsurprisingly goes all Bronson on their punk asses, after some training with knives, guns and weights. And this is how the rest of the film goes, there are a few breaks for musing on the failure of justice, the faults of liberal ideas and the destabilising effects of trauma, but the sociological context is hardly explored, it is there more as a counterweight to the violence a means of breaking the tension, alleviating the slightly one note nature of the film. Director/star Paul Naschy (Jacinto Molina) proves a dab hand with the material, though showing his age his past as a weightlifter enables him to pull off some impressive lifting during the training sequence, and while he takes a comically short time to become a sharp shooting, knife throwing master, he wears a face of such grim determination that his character becomes believable. Its a fine performance in a stony sort of way, he does little more than occasionally nod his head or shift an eyebrow but is never dull, he radiates a cold, unfeeling menace, stark urge for vengeance that really fits the material. The rest of the performances are generally fair as well, though since I can't find a cast list that actually matches actors to characters (this being quite a rare one) I won't go too much into details. The lead villain, Ralph, is a particularly effective scumbag, so props to whoever played him, and the women tend toward the rather beautiful, which is another definite plus. The action gets a bit repetitive as is perhaps inevitable and the film could have done with a little more ambition in its violence, knives and guns may be an efficient way of taking out the enemy but they aren't the most interesting of methods. Still, some bloody squibs and a decent body count keep things fun and the film isn't afraid of letting its baddies get down to some real mean behaviour. The opening violation is particularly good, sleaziness worthy of the 70's even if it isn't quite as excessive as some of that glorious decade. Later in the film this opening is revisited to god effect as well, jagged cuts to choice frozen highlights of his wife and daughters demise driving Dr Arranz to frenzy In fact the film in general looks as if it was made in the late 70's, the only thing that really connects it to its actual time of release is a number of cheeky references to Hollywood action, including one to Charles Bronson. Its a nice touch, as if Naschy is purposefully positioning his film over American ones as the definitive mindless action thriller. Definitive it ain't but the film is still a lot of fun, with even a few cheesy moments to raise chuckles it has a whole package, mean violence, nudity, rape, some fun bloodshed and some unintended laughs, its all there! Not a film likely to appeal to anyone outside of violent action trash and vengeance lovers, but to those its a rarity worth seeking out. Happy hunting!

the master and the pupil

In the French humorous show, "les guignols de l'info", Christophe Lambert often says in a weary tone: "Yeah, I know. All my movies are rotten." Well, he should think twice before telling silly things. Indeed, "Max et Jérémie" (1992) is his best movie since "Greystoke" (1984). And this terrific movie is perfectly mastered by Claire Devers. This woman's got plenty of nerve to film violence and blood.

As it was the case with another French movie "the little criminal" (1990, dialogs constitute the vividness of the movie. They contain a lot of humor that enables to keep the spectator in suspense. It also enables to reduce the seriousness of the dramatic side of the story. But especially, Claire Devers emphasized on the dialogs for a better focus on the relationships between the two men: on one hand, Jérémie (Christophe Lambert): a lost young man who wishes to gain Philippe Noiret's friendship and on the other hand, Max (Philippe Noiret), an elderly man who'll gradually become attached to Max. Little by little, a (a bit confused but strong) friendship will link the two men. Obviously, this friendship will have its ups and downs.

Apart from this, the action sequences aren't neglected for all that and they turn out to be thrilling. At the end, the whole gives a stable movie and remarkably well constructed. In spite of a few weaknesses (Claire Devers dressed a caricatured portrait of Jean-Pierre Marielle's assistant and the last twenty minutes tend to run out of steam), it's useless to be fussy for this brilliant success. This is arguably one of the best French detective movies of the nineties. At last, one thing I don't understand: how can such a good movie have a rather low mark on IMDB? It's not fair, it deserves much more recognition.

The greatest Quebecer film I have ever seen!!!

Requiem pour un beau sans-coeur is simply a great film. The story is about a criminal named Regis Savoie who gets out of jail and we see his life from the eyes of many people, each one giving his point of view on the man.The cast is awesome, especially Gildor Roy. The direction is simply wonderful and the script is very good; if you thought Elvis Gratton had the best one-liners in a Quebecer film, simply check this one out you will be very surprised. There are many ones that are truly funny! Overall, a great movie based on a true story also!! ...10/10

Awesome Movie

Sanjay Dutt was in a lean phase after Khatarnaak(1990) and he acted in 6-7 films that flopped. Adharm came around 1992 which was a bumper hit and proved to be a decent comeback for Sanjay Dutt. The film mainly focused on enemity between the good and the bad which is typical yet the story is narrated in a way with ups and downs that the audience will prefer it instantly. The enemies are all in one family where Mr Verma has 2 sons Jagganath and Avinash. Jagganath is the main villain and he is thrown out of the house by Mr Verma after he comes to know how evil Jagganath is. Jagganath swears to avenge his humiliation and will take his revenge. After Mr.Vermas death, Avinash takes responsibility of Dharam Nivas the home Mr Verma created with love and affection, the bunglow. Avinash is falsely trapped in a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison for 14 years. Avinash tells his wife and younger brother Vicky to go away and tell Vicky that his elder brother is dead. As time passes, Vicky and his punjabi Makhan Singh uncle and his mom live in Makhan's house. As time passes, Vicky grows up and after some boring yet funny comedy Vicky comes to know that his brother is alive and who the actual culprits are. Vicky starts working for Jagganath's son Raghunath and at the climax Vicky frames the villains and kills them in some awesome 90s style action seqences. The movie isn't bad at all and it's got a good story. Everyone has acted well especially Shatrugan Sinha and Sanjay Dutt. Shabana Azmi and Anita Raaj do a damn good job though their funny portions bore at times. Songs are average though Tuna Tuna became a superhit and it is an epic song the dance that Shakti and Sanjay perform are silly yet extremely funny. In general, Adharm is a hit movie and awesome in my opinion, a must watch.

This is as good as cop-films get

Tavernier's examination of the Paris police's losing battle against the drug-dealers was reportedly inspired by the experience of his son's addiction. It is an angry, despairing film. Early on the central character says that "all drug-dealers are terrorists" and later the police chief says that "my son is 13. He will have already met his first dealer".

This is a documentary-style examination from the front-line, where the police are demoralised, under-resourced, corrupt and incompetent. The 'hero', Lulu, (an outstanding performance by Didier Bezace) is a maverick detective who gets transferred to desk duties when he is angered by his drunken boss demanding the return of the unit's van in the middle of a stakeout - so he can go home! After struggling with the police station's incompetent bureaucracy, Lulu is placed in a new anti-drugs unit, led by practical joker Dodo, concerned only with filling in forms and meeting the Ministry's statistical targets.

The whole film rings true, right down to the tedious form-filling using old typewriters and stolen carbon-paper. There is no real plot, as the unit stumbles from disaster to disaster, but rather a series of incidents punctuated by much eating and drinking. As if to contrast with the chaos of the police unit, the film is shot calmly and lucidly by Tavernier. By the end of the film you have become involved with the characters and want to know more about their bleak futures. A wonderful film, and as good a portrait of policing (at its worst) as you will see.

The decline of a fabulous team.

Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac have been the best writers France had to offer as a contribution to the "suspense " genre.Without them,no HItchcock's "Vertigo' ,no Clouzot's "diabolique".

"Les eaux dormantes " finds the team back in familiar territory:a mysterious disappearance,the father's hero:whodunit?The mother,who did not love him anymore?The auntie,jealous of her sister?The retarded sister who seems to love her brother in a very particular way?The devoted domestic Galabru?This mysterious brunette who seems to be a long lost hero's lover?

This does not make a great movie for all that.During the second third of the story,we lose sight of the essential,with uninteresting developments (the Asian prostitute,Jacques Perrin and Daniel Gelin's characters).When finally,the director gets back to basics,we do not really care about the hero's family problems.Trying to get his spectator back,he intertwines present and black and white (and fragmented à la "hiroshima mon amour") shots from the past.But it's too little too late.

"Les eaux dormantes",on the paper ,although it's far from the two works mentioned above,was a relatively absorbing book.A faceless director and the fact that this kind of suspense is now over the hill led to public and critical indifference.

Don't Be Fooled by the Low Budget

Despite the fact that this movie is yet another retelling of gangland life during the Prohibition era, the smart performances by the four leads raise this low-budget film above the standard B-movie fare. In particular, it is interesting to see a young Rachel York of recent "Lucy" and "Kiss Me, Kate" fame turn what could have been a stereotypical gun moll/nightclub singer portrayal into a multi-dimensional and heartfelt performance of a 20-something woman whose experiences have made her much older than her years.

While the screenplay lacks depth, the actors do not. The fluid direction and crisp camera work also put this movie on a par with more expensive mainstream ventures. The story won't really tell you anything new about the psyches of killers like the Cole brothers or Dutch Schultz. But the actors who portray them - Christopher Bradley, Jeff Griggs, and Bruce Nozick - give it their all. Their performances are earnest. They do not play caricatures.

If you enjoy discovering surprisingly good acting in less than perfect films, "Killer Instinct" is worth the view. An added bonus is that you get to hear Rachel York sing. She has a terrific voice and she stylizes beautifully. She is the strongest selling point for seeing this film.

The Mayor (Akash Khurana) has taken a special interest in this case, and has issued intructions to Krishna, authorizing him to deal with this matter fully. A few days later, the Mayor is assasinated. When pressure mounts on J.P. Sethi to turn in Raghav, he instead pays another man to confess for the assasination, thus leading to the closure of this file. But Krishna is not convinced, and is sure that Raghav is behind the Mayor's assasination. Krishna has a sister, Bhavana (Urmilla Matondkar), who is in love with Shekhar. When Krishna finds out about this, he asks Bhavana to stop seeing Shekhar, as Shekhar is another alias for the cold-hearted killer Raghav.

brilliant in each n every dept

the two reasons to watch this flick are rgv, and nag. rgv's brilliant direction and nag's superb performance are the heart and soul of this movie. nag hardly has any dialogs. most of his performance comes from his facial expressions and body language. ramu failed in this venture as this movie did not appeal to the people.

this is one of the best movies from rgv. also, this is one of the best movies in nag's career(in my view , actually, the only best movie of nag's).

i mostly liked this because of it's content. i still enjoy watching this movie as it has strong human emotions that have ever been captured on celluloid. IT'S A RAW FILM.

PS: did i mention that this was the first rgv movie in which the lead character is a out-and-out gangster(of course, Shiva too has gangster theme but the hero was a student-turned-gangster)
