If you liked Hustle & Flow, you'll love this film
Mike Lilly, who attended CalArts for a while, studying under Hollywood greats, wrote, produced, and directed this contemporary story based on a real person. A man who gets out of prison for murdering his wife finds himself on the means streets of Appalachia. In the style of a Robert Mitchum film, he saves a street prostitute from a beating, becoming her accidental pimp. Thanks to a librarian john she has befriended, she discovers the truth about her new "boyfriend," leading to tragic results. The actors who play the killer and the street prostitute give world class performances, worthy of a Nick Nolte or a Maggie Gyllenhall in "Sherrybaby." The other actors, all non-professionals, also give excellent performances, showing real people as they live. Filmed using contemporary film-making techniques, it won many awards around the state where it was shot, West Virginia, and screened around the country including at The Pioneer Theater in NYC. Music by the Pistolwhippers, John Lilly and Robert Taylor, three of WV's finest musicians.

Rare, but worth looking for
An elegant, Melville-esquire exercise in non-mainstream noir film-making. It could be argued it's a bit thin on plot but - come on!
Exciting and dark Spanish thriller about a psycho killer , being shot in ¨Seven¨ style .
Bleak and gloomy Spanish film with high doses of violence , darksome moments and starred by a stellar cast as George Corraface , Ana Fernandez and Emilio Gutierrez Caba . Tension, suspense, and unsettling scenes when a cop and his family is harassed by a dangerous criminal and dealing with a mysterious series killer who executes slaughter . The son of a cop is murdered , at the crime scene comes the Police Inspector named Jaime (George Corraface) . But the murderer has had a lovely relationship with his wife (Ana Fernandez) and he seeks reckoning . Meanwhile , a reporter (Ana Otero) is investigating the deeds . The family in its own home is besieged and terrorized by the psycho-killer attacker and the Inspector looks for some twisted means to chase the murderous . Jaime's relentless pursuit leads to Lazaro (Emilio Gutierrez Caba) at a final confrontation but surprises and twists emerge .
Trilling , darkling picture about a children killer that contains chills , shocks , suspense , plot twists , grisly murders and numerous creepy scenes . Mirk and disturbing film that contains intrigue , action , suspense , twists and turns . This twisty film packs terrifying and hair-raising frames and images of blood and gore . It's darkly rendered and wildly thrilling . The picture's taut, intense and with propulsive murk momentums . This is a shadowy, sharp-eyed Spanish crime drama with intriguing narrative written by the same director who debuts in this crime flick ; being well developed , as we are interested on the events are we are really cared what happens to this people . This violent , murky story is filmed in naturalist and eerie style and some takes with camera over shoulder and Steadicam . While the look is suitable creepy and frightening, the argument spreads to the breaking point and the ending turns out to be a little frustrating . Good acting by protagonist trio such as Georges Corraface as Jaime , Ana Fernández as Julia and special mention to Emilio Gutiérrez Caba as an ominous psycho killer named Lazaro . Pretty good support cast such as Alberto Jiménez as Ivan , Magüi Mira as the forensic Virginia , Carlos Kaniowsky as Tony , Hector Colome and Ana Otero . Suspenseful and thrilling musical score by Luis Miguel Cobo . Dark and shaded cinematography by Juan Miguel Azpiroz , shot in Madrid and Barcelona ; filming in night , obscure settings and plenty of rain , similarly to ¨Seven¨ . The motion picture is strangely directed by Miguel Angel Vivas , an expert on rare , dim atmosphere as he also proved in ¨Secuestrados¨ that tells the story of how a Spanish family suffers an express kidnapping that takes place during one single night and is handled by a group of criminals from Eastern Europe , it achieved undoubted success and important reputation . "Reflections" ,International/English title, is a strong , abstruse film and quite a few impact, though failed at Spanish Box office . In spite of its violence and slow-moving narrative ¨Reflejos¨ results to be an acceptable and passable thriller .

They come up with a plan to sell the boss to the police and the FBI. However, Al suffers from short-term memory loss and has to be told the story by John and Jack.
Italian comedy with clever twists. Comedia Italiana con una tramma ben scritto.
The Legend of Al John and Jack is the story of three incompetent gangsters who, having screwed up one time too many, now find themselves running for their lives from their old boss. Not everything in this movie works, but there are a lot of parts that are hilarious. The cursed gun. Convincing the amnesiac that he's an exorcist. And of course "Frankie, we'll let you live if you can answer one question - What is the capital of Birma?" "I don't know! How should I know that?" "Frankie, Frankie, Frankie... You could have said anything and we wouldn't have known any better! No one knows what the capital of Birma is!"
Big,big bubble!
I will not say about the story.I will say about terrorism. When 17 of October made a terrorism everyone panicked. When Osama crashed the towers everyone was panicked too.Was the film prophetic?Perakis can make good films,in his own style, like it or not,but this one is different.Although some of the cast is not uncommon the new ones make sense. The rhythm is lower but somewhere in the end you don't follow it.It began with positive prospects but "it made it a sea" somewhere.
Crossed Wires
An intriguing story, or rather TWO intriguing stories of couples struggling to justify their relationship. Socas and Prodan are scientists whose mutual physical attraction is jaded by ethical differences. Rheinhold and Calvo are a homosexual couple getting to grips with discrimination. They say Argentina is one of the 'hotbeds' of modern psychiatry and this film sustains the claim, but the oblique dialogues and 'suggested' situations and perspectives remain fresh and surprising to the cerebral viewer. The parallel 'affairs' join up in the abrupt and quirky finale, leaving us, the spectators, with a very REAL sense of loss and surprise... something which movies often tend to 'telegraph' beforehand. A strange film, which may be proposing a new, elliptical approach to storytelling. Better on a large screen than on video.
Surprisingly, not bad
Not bad. Not bad at all. But not too good either. The story is really bad, unoriginal, idiotic, BUT many situations in it are very funny. Most of the actors played very well (except for Veronique Cloutier, who seemed out of the picture a lot, I thought, and oh god! her song was so bad I plugged my ears). One think bugged me: there are a lot of very violent (disgusting) scenes which I could have passed... I usually don't expect to be closing my eyes each 5-10 minutes when watching a comedy.
I had promised myself not to watch it, because the critics said it was the worst movie of the year, and worst quebecer movie of all times, but when I saw the trailer I laughed a lot at some of the jokes and I thought «well...maybe I should give it a try? And hey, 4$CAN at the video club is not the end of the world». Ended up I liked the movie. See, we should never believe the critics: after all, they were all unanimous in thinking that this movie was the worst rubbishy of the year, but everyone I know that had the courage to rent it anyways said it «wasn't as bad as they said».
Women prisoners strike up a friendship with a young law student who works as a part-time prison guard. Together they discover that a corporation funds and is profitting from the plantation-like work environment they are forced to work under. In a botched attempt to organize a protest against their "slave labor", the women take over the prison - A rare glimpse of the effects of the prison industrial complex on female inmates.
Not just a great movie, but an extremely important one.
CIVIL BRAND is a story which tells of a women's prison in which the inmates are forced to work as slaves, and are exploited as little more than animals. True, we've all seen this in SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, where convicts are put to physical labor, but it's always been presented as an acceptable situation. A man robs a store and kills the clerk, so why not have him pound out license plates and working on road construction crews?
CIVIL BRAND offers a fresh look at the Prison-Industrial Complex, attacking the issue from several different angles. For one thing, the inmates aren't working on roads or some kind of community service- they're making clothes for department stores. A more provocative approach, though, is the fact that these slaves are female, a scenario that folks are not used to considering. Outstanding performances by LisaRaye, Mos Def, Clifton Powell, MC Lyte, Monica Calhoun, Lark Voorhies, and the sensational N'Bushe Wright (the lady Panther from DEAD PRESIDENTS who is one of the most talented people acting in Cinema today, not to mention drop-dead gorgeous), powerful cinematography, and brutal honesty come together to make CIVIL BRAND not just a great movie, but an extremely important one.

Chan Wing Yan, a young police officer, has been sent undercover as a mole in the local mafia. Lau Kin Ming, a young mafia member, infiltrates the police force. Years later, their older counterparts, Chen Wing Yan and Inspector Lau Kin Ming, respectively, race against time to expose the mole within their midst.
more than just entertaining
This movie is well-made, stylish and extremely entertaining. However, as stated by the review from a Hong Kong viewer, there is also depth and subtlety rarely found in action/thrillers. It is this depth that makes this movie brilliant. The depth of this movie is best served by the understated yet deeply moving performances of the main characters. Viewers are allowed into the inner changes of these characters and before long, the viewers begin to care about them, be it the "good guy" (Yan) or the "bad guy" (Ming). The rest of cast successfully relate the complicated and exciting plot to the viewers, and all the supporting performances are almost flawless, perhaps with the exception of the female psychologist who seems sadly one-dimensional. I grew up in Hong Kong but has since lived most of my life in Canada. With this duo-cultural background, I have mixed feelings about the Hollywood remaking of this movie. On the one hand, I am happy for the Hollywood recognition of this great movie by remaking it. On the other hand, I would hate to see how badly sabotaged the end result would be. Some things just do not translate. As a minimum, I hope the great director Scorcese will make good use of the major plot line and generate a haute thriller and with the excellent cast, develop some in-depth characterization. The Chinese philosophy and the spirit of the original film is better left undisturbed.
