Review :

Funny, Entertaining, and oddly-romantic

I fell in love with this movie. Before I saw it, I didn't know much at all about Vincent Gallo. I saw the trailer that was attached to "Out of Sight" and was like "well, that looks interesting. Maybe I'll check it out sometime." It took me a long time to track it down, but it was so worth the wait. One thing I can honestly say, is that the trailer is NOT deceptive. It pretty much tells you EXACTLY what you're going to get. One thing I wasn't expecting thoug, was the humor. There were times in this movie that I had to rewind and watch over because I was laughing so hard from the previous scene that I missed what was going on. Despite the film's depressing tone and deliberately grainy look, there are a lot of laughs here. Most of them come from the character of Billy Brown.

Never in my life, have I seen a more pathetic hero. The guy is almost totally unlikeable without ONE redeeming quality. In the opening frame, he's being released from Prison. He's been there for something like five years and it's obvious that he's coming out of there in the clothes that he was wearing when he went in. His wardrobe is hilarious and his red ankle boots are a laugh riot. As are his pants that appear to be about four inches too short. You can tell when you first see him that this guy is a real piece of work. The first ten minutes or so focus on our new friend trying to find a bathroom, without any luck. When he finally does find a restroom, he is harassed by an obese homosexual. This sets up a scene that is kinda sick but darkly funny.

Next thing, we learn the plan (part of it anyway) that Billy has up his sleeve. We meet his lunatic parents through a phone conversation and learn that they are clueless that Billy has been in lockup for the last five years. Apparently, they are stupid enough to believe that their son has been working in a foreign country as a government agent. They also believe that he is married. So he has to find a girl to pose as his wife. This sets up even more hilarious scenes as he kidnaps a young tap-dancer. I'm not going to go much farther. But the movie does get even funnier. Not only is it funny but it covers a lot of emotions. Here's a guy who's clearly been a loser his whole life, trying desperately to impress his parents who could care less about him. It sounds really depressing, but it's actually inspiring and, because it ends on a high note, it's uplifting.

While it may not be for everyone, it's still a very entertaining and rewarding film. It's been a few years since Gallo has done anything, but I'm really looking forward to his next project.

If anything, I'd say that this is a black-comedy/character study. It's probably the most original film of 1998 and it did take a lot of chances with its unique style. I have no complaints about this movie whatsoever and I'm giving it the highest score possible. It's a 10+.

Intelligent Drama

Strong performances by Edward Norton & Edward Furlong really make this
film for me. The direction by Tony Kaye with his mixture of black &
white history contrasting with colourful reality is magic to absorb and
shows this film up to be what it is – a true American Classic,
ironically by a British director.

The film itself is about two brothers, Derek the elder and Danny the
younger adoring sibling. Derek has been in jail for three years after
killing a black youth who tried to rob the family; the nature &
brutality of the crime still shocks me to this day.

AHX tracks Derek's history through the first formation of racist
sentiment laid down by the father. These feeling of hate are
embedded when later his father is killed in the line of duty. Derek
becomes involved in the local Nazi movement, his intellect turned by
youthful rage into hate crimes and the rational that comes with Neo
Nazi propaganda.

The Nazi-tattoo sporting, egotistical, philosophical younger Derek is a
steam train waiting to crash, his propulsion to stardom is eventually
embodied when he takes the life of the young thief, the scene is very
apt as he calmly lies down and knows he will be a hero to his friends.

Without wanting to spoil the film Derek encounters change in the
prison, he meets a black man whom he works with and faces his own
demons inside, I will leave it there for those who want to be moved by
his transformation. Anyway, he comes out a new man and only wants to be
that new person, which means leaving the old crowd, leaving the
Anti-Jewish sepal he's been living with so long. The problem lies with
his brother who has become a little Derek, getting drunk and being
influenced like he was. Derek's cross to bear is that he can't change
his life without his brother coming with him and being on the right
side of humanity.

I think that this film is less about race and more about our ability to
change as individuals, the fact that we can become what and who we want
is a gift. Derek becomes the man he always wanted to be, he only wants
the same for his brother.

Kaye's use of black & white creates an atmospheric drama that builds
tension and has you feeling like a stung out piece of drum leather by
mid movie. I love the way that Kaye subtly uses quotes and
intellectualises the Nazi Stance, only to watch it being broken down by
the same man (Derek / Norton).

Norton is a joy to watch as is Gould and Furlong.

To sum up American History X is a powerful intelligent drama, which
provides plenty of discussion after the movie. This film should be on
every high school curriculum…

Has to lean on the TV series

Strangely enough, I watched the movie before I watched the TV series.

In short, the movie is just another long episode in the TV series. If you take it that way, you'd probably love the movie as much as the TV series.

The movie is unable to stand on its own. First-time viewers will be puzzled by the relationship between Aoshima and Muroi. Many will be disappointed by the relative ease at which the cyberkiller and kidnappers were caught. But those are not the main points of the story.

The stratification and redtape within the police force tend to take centre stage in the TV series, and in the movie too. The police officers of Wangan branch were unable to participate in case investigations because they are "just a branch". And Aoshima got into trouble (at the end) only because he had to wait for the headquarters to officially arrest the kidnappers. Muroi, on his way up the rankings, finds it impossible to take care of his subordinates at the frontline.

Prospective viewers are recommended to watch the TV series first, although it makes no difference if you are a fan of Japanese dark comedy. Then treat this movie as another TV episode as you watch it, because it is really just a TV special.

A comedy very entertaining

It's an interesting movie. So many elements that make a movie entertaining are put together into this movie, but the arrangement is still sufficiently clear. Sad and horrible but mainly amusing. In fact full of sense of humour in hong kong style.

Tats Lau is born to be a comedian. Of course the "surprise" given by Spencer Lam is also unforgettable. The most impressive to me is Teresa Lee. She would be a very attractive actress if opportunity is given, and I think she is well-deserved for such opportunity. Her "disappearing" in movie industry in recent years no doubt can be considered to be a loss.

Hong Kong has become a place quite boring. Really do I miss those sense of humour we can find in this movie because no way can I find it in hong kong today.

Worth seeing.

A Genuine Old-Fashioned International Thriller!

I admit to having found The White Raven a good "little film". A return to the sort of B-list thrillers studios used to churn out on a regular basis. The title refers to an enormous diamond hidden during World War II. The last man to know of its whereabouts (played with barely restrained menace by the imposing Hannes Jaenicke) is in a European prison and is dying. He reveals a vital clue to Tully Windsor, a reporter for the Christian Science Monitor, and Windsor suddenly finds himself the target of several groups competing for possession of the diamond.

No, The White Raven definitely wasn't Foreign Correspondent or Ministry of Fear, or even Beach Blanket Bingo. But, thanks to directors Jakub Rucinski and Andrew Stevens, it carried enough nice touches to make at least one viewing a worthwhile pursuit.

Chief among these was the late Ron Silver as Tully Windsor. After a career of playing slimy villains, Silver took on a heroic role and made it pay off. His usually sinister features easily metamorphosed into a cool, calculating James Bond-like expression, and he moved from crusading reporter to MAC-10 wielding hero without missing a beat.

Silver was one of a small handful of domestically recognizable faces within the cast of the film. Elizabeth Shepherd especially shone as Hannah Rothschild: one of the people hunting for the White Raven. She wore the matronly European power-broker role well, reminding us that she was originally considered for the role of Mrs. Peel in The Avengers.

Elsewhere, Roy Scheider practically slept through his role of Silver's boss within the Christian Science Monitor. Along with Scheider there was Doug Lennox as a somewhat stereotypical corrupt American military officer. The remaining cast of The White Raven read like an Eastern European phone directory, which was actually one of the film's major strengths. After years of enduring small films continually set in either New York City or Los Angeles, it was refreshing to encounter new faces and foreign locales. I had mentioned James Bond earlier. In many ways The White Raven stands as sort of a James Bond film with a reduced budget.

Back to the cast. I had already mentioned Hannes Jaenicke: playing Hannibal Lector as a WWE wrestler. There was also Jack Recknitz as one of those former Nazi concentration camp guards who miraculously managed to take on a high-level Eastern European law enforcement job after the war. Besides these worthies we also had Joanna Pacula . . . veteran of numerous television and film appearances . . . as a sculptress who becomes involved in the plot (and, subsequently, takes on the role of romantic interest for Silver). She does well, especially since she has to make the audience suspect that Not Everything Is As It Seems Here.

Which brings us back to one of the problems of the film. Michael Blodgett's adaptation of his book tends to confuse whoever we're supposed to be rooting for in the course of the picture. It becomes difficult for Silver's character (and by default, the audience) to identify positively with anyone because we're never sure who is with who at any one point. Was Recknitz's character associated with the Paris-based group run by Elizabeth Shepherd? Was Lennox working independently? Was Balboa fond of bananas? Who put the bomp in the bomp-shu-bomp-shu-bomp? Who is John Galt? (The situation isn't helped by the fact that people end up being killed left and right to the point where keeping a scorecard might be handy. You watch the film and almost wish someone would live longer than five minutes simply so that they could deliver some useful information.) And speaking of action, while parts of it did work in the film, others didn't succeed as well. For instance: while I was aware that Silver was the hero of the picture, I felt he managed to escape too easily from many of the tense situations he found himself in. Since he wasn't going up against Imperial Stormtroopers from Star Wars (perhaps the worst shots and stupidest searchers in all of motion pictures), then the average viewer could be forgiven for raising an eyebrow. In one instance Silver manages to escape a group of pursuers through the simple act of hiding in a doorway and standing still . . . which would've worked if he'd been Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, but he wasn't. Rucinski and Stevens did an overall remarkable job with what they had, but what the film needed for such scenes was a director like John McTiernan; someone who has a feel for actually inflicting suffering on a hero and setting up genuine fear for his survival.

But the pendulum swings both ways and the film builds nicely in other directions. Especially at the denouement, when the location of the diamond is finally revealed (as well as revealing how a large diamond can be smuggled out of a Nazi concentration camp). As with many other jewels, The White Raven possessed its own unique flaws, but it also managed to occasionally shine brightly.

Wong Jing's commitment to schlock cinema may not be widely admired in HK film-making circles, but he's still capable of turning out worthwhile potboilers like A TRUE MOB STORY, which he wrote, produced and directed. Andy Lau plays a low-ranking Triad mobster who loses his nerve during a gang fight while saving the boss's son (Mark Cheng) from a rival gangster (Ben Ng), an incident which results in the death of Lau's beloved wife. Unable to cope with the subsequent demands of his Triad lifestyle, Lau becomes an unwitting pawn in the hands of his ungrateful superiors, and when Ng comes looking for revenge, they abandon Lau to his fate. Further treachery is revealed when Lau - who is virtually penniless and beholden to the gang for his pitiful income

The casting of poster-icon Lau is central to Wong's blatant deconstruction of the 'honorable Triad' myth popularised in the mid-1980s by directors like John Woo; Lau's innate decency and his natural aversion to violence is frequently contrasted with the vulgar excesses of his fellow gangsters, most of whom are portrayed as reptilian thugs with no respect for anything but wealth, power and brutality. Lau's ultimate redemption is provided by Gigi Leung, his charming co-star from the unexpected smash-hit FULL THROTTLE (1995), playing a barrister whose ambivalent feelings for Lau threatens her somewhat strained relationship with fiancé Alex Fong (effectively understated in a difficult role), who also happens to be the head of the local Organized Crime and Triad Bureau! The breathless narrative is prone to sudden outbursts of blistering violence, but the fight scenes are more chaotic than extravagant (the "Young and Dangerous" series has a lot to answer for!), and the film is obliged for the most part to coast along on the strength of the performances, which are uniformly excellent. Given that the script is supposed to be based on 'true' events (hence the title), Wong goes well over the top on occasion (check out the judge's reaction to Lau's manufactured display of 'nobility' during the first courtroom sequence!), and his film has none of the myth-making grandeur of other recent Lau vehicles like THE ADVENTURERS (1995) or SHANGHAI GRAND (1996), but it passes the time amiably enough whilst upholding all the familiar traditions of this particular sub-genre.

Didn't surprise

Honestly from the cover you could guess that this wasn't going to be something special. But still I had some small glamors of hope that it could prove better than it looks. Glamors that were soon diminished by countless problems regarding both plot and direction.

The "Yakuza Way" is a low budget action/crime flick starring the ever cool Riki Takeuchi as a yakuza member who has traveled to the U.S. for a drug deal. Hoping, after that he can start a new life. Suffice to say, events don't go his way and Takeuchi's character is forced to fight corrupt cops, and gangsters for revenge.

Director Shundo Ohkawa's attempt to make a Heroic Bloodshed film, backfires. This is neither heroic nor bloody. Yes the budget was small and it is understandable if some parts of the film looked a bit weak but the problem is that practically everything here is in fact, weak. Aside from Takeuchi who is his usual cool self, the acting from the support cast is bad and over the top. The cinematography is no good either, with a lot of unneeded overlong shots of cars driving by. They actually take a good portion of the film while not offering anything else in return. Choreography is another part that is poorly done. Several scenes come in mind where character movements are awkward and unrealistic to the films's supposed genre and overall feel.

There is really no reason to see "Yakuza Way" if you're not a Takeuchi fan. But even if you are, if you take besides the large amounts of unintential gags, you'll have trouble grasping any other form of entertainment from this poorly done crime flick.

a young man gets into an accident. he now owes people money. he lives in present day Almaty, Kazakhstan, where jobs are scarce. he turns to dubious characters for help which leads him deeper and deeper into trouble. i really enjoyed this movie for a number of reasons. first up, it gives us a glimpse of present day Kazakhstan which is very real. you get a feel for the city, it's inhabitants and what kind of struggles they are going through. the acting by the lead actors (poor state run art school students ??) is also very refreshing. rather that emoting like crazy, they seem almost resigned to the fate that is being inflicted upon them. it is the sort of desperate calm that truly happens in life, rather than Hollywood manufactured fake emotions. i also enjoyed getting a glimpse of this vintage post communism society. only communism has not gone away, it's ghost still lingers and the people ache for it. the certainty of a job, security, the apparatus they are used to. the director reflects on this is some side monologues, but thankfully does not get heavy on it. the ending of the movie is rather abrupt, but seems completely plausible within the context of what is going on in that country right now. watch this one, you will not regret it.

Set during a massive flood started by a dam accident in a small town, Tom (Christian Slater) is an armored truck guard who gets robbed by Jim ('Morgan Freeman' ). Tom gets away with all the money and hides it. In a panic, he tells the sheriff about the area he hid the money in and the sheriff locks him up. Now Tom has to get to the money and keep himself alive battling the sheriff, Jim and his crew and the elements.

Much better than rating suggests!

Really surprised at the low rating of this film which as a action thriller is immensely watchable and re-watchable which for me is the test of a good film – that is bears being seen over and over. It is as others have said an endlessly inventive thriller with good action and the idea of a film where all the characters are continuously falling in, or speeding over floods in tremendous. It is not as others have said "another heist film" because the environment and opportunity of the potential crime is different and thought provoking. Doesn't this gain some extra interest given the Hurricane flooding in the southern states also? I enjoy Morgan Freeman's portrayal as well as Christian Slater and Minnie Driver's performances. The old couple is a marvellous piece of human comedy, well portrayed by both actors. Watch this film and then . . . watch it again!

Good TV Movie

One Tough Cop has a terrible title, but is a fun movie. More like a made for TV movie than a theatrical release, it nonetheless is entertaining. Chris Penn and Baldwin turn in good performances and the story, although cliche, is good enough to keep your attention. I gave it a 7/10.

An excellent movie that I've enjoyed through many viewings

I suppose this is actually a B movie, but there's something about this movie that keeps me coming back to see it again every few months. Maybe it's the rather unique (for Hollywood, anyway) relationship between Meg and John. I mean, they don't even so much as kiss each other and barely touch at all! But I think they make the screen sizzle, nonetheless.

I must admit I love the action in this movie, too. Every once in a while I wonder how a small time forger learned to fight and shoot like she does, but then I blissfully ignore it and just enjoy the movie.

Great action scenes, wonderful relationship development and great acting by Mira and Yun-Fat Chow make this a movie I'm sure I'll see many more times.

Speedy, inventive and very entertaining

The only reason we have a film called "U.S. Marshals" is the cold fact that somebody was simply dying to see Tommy Lee Jones returning into his Oscar-awarded role as a tough, bold and unhesitating Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard. At first I was thinking "just another foolish sequel" and I have to admit that at one point it more or less even looked like "U.S. Marshals" is basically the same film than "The Fugitive" but only with Wesley Snipes in the shoes of Harrison Ford. But this is the real and the final truth: from what I remember "The Fugitive" was like I never considered it as all that great but since I was definitely on the edge of my seat with "U.S. Marshals" only logical thing would be to assume that this was naturally a better movie.

I tried to avoid "U.S. Marshals" for many years (I've no idea why) but now when I finally saw it I was stunned by it. Interesting detail about this film as well as "The Fugitive" too is the peculiar fact that during the movie audience can't never really decide who's side their sympathies actually are and which one do they want to succeed: the innocent fugitive or Tommy Lee Jones' eminent marshal because clearly they're both equally heroes. "U.S. Marshals" is not a special thriller but it works splendidly as what it is and it doesn't try to be anything it isn't. Tommy Lee Jones is the ultimate star of the movie but Snipes is also pretty excellent as Sheridan. When you think of "U.S. Marshals" the impressive scene where Sheridan jumps onto the roof of a moving subway is already a classic. Still I'm sure that's not necessarily the only scene audience remembers. I don't know what you think but "U.S. Marshals" was a fine experience for me.

Special Officer Dev Malhotra is assigned the task of tracking the killers of India's top politician. The only lead he has is the dubious statement of a thief who overheard a conversation that some persons were going to kill the Prime Minister. While investigating, he rescues a dancer/singer, Tina, who is mistaken by his family (consisting of his father, Dr. Malhotra; mother Anjali, and sister, Kanchi) as his girlfriend. As he persists with this assignment he will soon not only be pitted against his very own biological parent - who now has two identities - as well as face distrust from his superiors.

Good

Aakrosh: Cyclone of Anger was another action film of Shetty's from 1998. This film was a hit although not Shetty's first hit from 1998 which was Vinashak. This film is similar to Vinashak in one way. It has a good story just like Vinashak. The whole plot is about some terorist like villains who want to assassinate the Home Minister. This goes unsuccessful because of Officer Dev Malhotra who is always there to flop the attack from our villains. However, when Shetty tries to find the villain a sniper guy kills the bad police guy who is about to tell the truth to Sunil Shetty. The film moves to another part of India where Shetty meets his love and the heroine Shilpa Shetty who is also another secret agent like him. Now they team up and hunt down the villains. However, the main villain turns out to be none other than Dev's step dad who his mom divorced. How Dev stops his step dad and the other villains with the help of his love and the butt kicking secret agent Shilpa Shetty forms the rest of this action packed film. The film has a good story and the handling is good. The first half keeps you guessing who is the main person responsible for these attacks. How does he keep on killing all the people Shetty captures. The main problem with the film is the forced comedy by the constable Johny Lever which is boring and forces you to shift the focus. The ending is a bit too rushed due to the fact that Sunil shoots his step dad and the movie just ends. The ending could've been a bit better. However, the movie is damn good on the whole. The film could've been a bit better but it entertains and keeps you thinking. Overall, a decent movie from Shetty. These are the kind of films he needs. Not typical messiah of the poor films which is pretty typical for him. Most Shetty films lack a proper plot but these kind of films make him the actor he is. These films sheds him out of his Balwaan image where he hams up shouting at the villains when he gets tortured in prison. These kind of films mature the tough action hero image of Sunil Shetty. Keep it up Sunil!

You've probably never heard of anybody in this movie, but it's definitely worth a look (if you have nothing better to do)

The box cover compares itself to Quentin Tarantino. I assume this movie is trying to be similar to Reservoir Dogs. That, I can tell you, it's definitely not. The only real comparison that can be made is the fact the movie is about a bunch of criminals involved in a heist-gone-wrong. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Although, I do have to say the first scene made the movie pretty predictable, even if you're not looking too hard. It has it's own style, which it should be proud of. It really was better than I thought it would be, and I didn't catch myself watching the clock throughout. Thomas Baumann both directed and wrote the film so I guess I should give him credit, even though I've never heard of him or any of his other movies.

The movie itself starts off slow but it really does get witty and picks up the pace once it gets through the clichéd beginning. There are two notable scenes I will always remember (I won't spoil it here for you, but when you see the "Duncan Proof Knot", that's one of them).

The best actor in the movie is Kelvin Webb, who has no other credits but has an uncanny resemblance to Laurence Fishburne. On the opposite end of that is Kip Ellwood who played the "Head Hillbilly In Charge", so to speak. I really didn't like his performance as it seemed as if he's trying to hard to be a mean hillbilly. The rest of the cast is just mediocre. All the hillbilly family reminded me of the family from House Of 1000 Corpses. Could be just me, but I liked these hillbillies better than Zombie's version and thought they were a bit more humorous (if Zombie's were meant to be humorous at all).

Overall, it's worth a look, bad acting from Kip Ellwood aside.
